Part 1: Learning Management
Google Classroom: Deep Dive
1. The 4 Pillars of Classroom
Understanding the Interface
Google Classroom is divided into four distinct sections. Understanding these is key to organization.
- Stream: The "Social Feed". Use this for Announcements only. (Do not post homework here!)
- Classwork: The "Library". Where all materials, assignments, and quizzes live.
- People: The "Register". Manage Teachers (inviting HODs) and Students.
- Grades: The "Mark Sheet". A grid view of all progress.
Pro Tip
Disable "Show condensed notifications" in Stream settings. Keep the Stream clean!
2. Class Setup & Security
Getting Students In
How do we invite students securely?
- Class Code: A 6-digit code (e.g., `xy7-88k`). Display this on the projector day 1.
- Invite Link: Email this link to the student mailing list.
- Stream Settings: Decide who can post:
- "Students can post and comment" (High trust).
- "Students can only comment" (Medium trust).
- "Only teachers can post" (Low trust / Lecture style).
3. Types of Classwork
Choosing the Right Tool
When you click "Create", you have 5 options. Which one do you use?
| Type | Purpose |
| Assignment | Student must submit a file (Word, PDF, Image). |
| Quiz Assignment | Automatically creates a Google Form quiz. |
| Question | Quick poll (e.g., "Are you present today?"). |
| Material | Read-only resources (Syllabus, Slides). No grading. |
| Reuse Post | Copy a post from last year's class. |
4. Organization: Topics
Stop the Chaos
Without "Topics", your Classwork tab becomes a messy list of 100 files.
Best Practices for Topics:
- By Unit: "Unit 1: Mechanics", "Unit 2: Thermodynamics".
- By Week: "Week 1 (Oct 12-18)", "Week 2 (Oct 19-25)".
- By Type: "Assignments", "Lecture Notes", "Recordings".
5. The "Make a Copy" Feature
The Most Powerful Feature
You upload a template (e.g., "Lab Report Template.docx").
- Option A (Students can view): They can only read it.
- Option B (Students can edit): EVERYONE types on the SAME document (Chaos!).
- Option C (Make a copy for each student): GOLD STANDARD.
Result: Google creates 30 separate documents named "Student Name - Lab Report". You can open them and watch students type in real-time.
6. Grading & Returning
The Feedback Loop
The cycle of assessment in Classroom:
- Turn In: Student submits work. Status changes to "Turned In".
- Review: Teacher opens doc. Adds "Private Comments" or suggestions.
- Grading: Teacher enters score (e.g., 45/50).
- RETURN: Crucial Step! Students cannot see their grade until you click "Return". The doc ownership transfers back to the student.
🔴 Practical Session 1
Let's Apply What We Learned
Activity: The Classroom Simulator
I will now switch to the Demo Tool to show these features live.
1. We will look at the Stream vs Classwork distinction.
2. We will create a "Week 1" Topic.
3. We will post a Material (PDF) and an Assignment.
4. We will Grade a student and "Return" it.
(Please click '2. Classroom Demo' in the top menu)
Academic Integrity: Turnitin
It does NOT detect Plagiarism.
Wait, what? Turnitin detects Similarity.
- Plagiarism is an ethical act (stealing ideas).
- Similarity is text matching (copy-pasting).
- Example: A student quotes Einstein. Turnitin marks it Red (100% match). Is it plagiarism? No, if cited correctly.
Turnitin Configuration
Critical Settings for Instructors
| Setting | Recommendation |
| Repository |
Standard (Saves paper) vs. No Repository (Draft check). |
| Exclude Bibliography |
YES. Don't punish students for listing sources. |
| Exclude Quotes |
YES. Ignores text inside "quotation marks". |
Part 2: Engagement Tools
Zoom, Padlet, OBS & Canva
Zoom: Security First
Preventing "Zoom Bombing"
Before you teach, check your Settings.
- Waiting Room: ALWAYS ON. You admit students one by one or all at once.
- Screen Share: Set to "Host Only" by default.
- Chat: Set to "Host Only" if students are distracting each other.
- Remove Participant: If you kick someone out, ensure "Allow removed participants to rejoin" is OFF.
Zoom: Active Learning
Breakout Rooms
The solution to silence.
- Assign Automatically: Random groups (Networking).
- Assign Manually: Specific groups (Projects).
- Timer: Set a hard stop (e.g., 10 minutes).
🔴 Practical Demo 2
Let's simulate a Breakout Session.
1. I will create 5 rooms.
2. Task: Introduce yourself.
3. I will "Broadcast" a message to all rooms.
Collaboration: Padlet
The Digital Whiteboard
Zoom Chat is temporary. Padlet is permanent.
- Use Case 1 (Brainstorm): "Post one word that describes Physics."
- Use Case 2 (Q&A): "Post anonymous questions here during the lecture."
- Use Case 3 (Gallery): Students upload photos of their handwritten math solutions.
Limit: Free account allows 3 Padlets. Export old ones to PDF to save space.
OBS Studio
Professional Broadcasting
Why use OBS instead of just recording Zoom?
- Scenes: Switch views instantly (Webcam -> PPT -> Browser).
- Overlays: Add your university logo or your name on screen.
- Quality: Records directly to hard drive (1080p), not compressed cloud video.
🔴 Practical Demo 3
Watch me setup a "Lecture Scene" in 60 seconds.
1. Add Source: Window Capture (PPT).
2. Add Source: Video Capture (Webcam).
3. Hit Record.
Visual Design: Canva
Design for Non-Designers
- Education Account: Verify with your .edu email for Premium features.
- Presentations: "Talking Presentations" allow you to record voice over slides.
- Infographics: Summarize a 50-page chapter into one visual image.
Part 3: Assessment & Planning
Kahoot, Forms & The Lesson Builder
Kahoot!
The Wake-Up Call
Best used Formatively (to check learning), not Summatively (for final marks).
- Classic Mode: Player vs. Player.
- Ghost Mode: Play against previous scores.
- Reports: The most valuable part. It tells you "Question 4 was the hardest" (only 20% got it right). Reteach that topic.
The Digital Lesson Plan
The 4-E Framework

Automating the Plan
The Lesson Builder Tool
We don't want to write lesson plans by hand.
I have designed a custom Lesson Builder for you.
- Selects tools automatically.
- Supports Daily & Weekly formats.
- Exports to PDF instantly.
🔴 Practical Demo 4
I will now open the Lesson Builder.
1. Open '3. Lesson Builder' from the menu.
2. Select 'Weekly Plan'.
3. Fill in Day 1 and Day 2.
4. Download PDF.
Part 4: Training Evaluation
Feedback & Improvement
Evaluating Training
Kirkpatrick's Model (Simplified)
Level 1: Reaction
"Did they like it?"
- Tool: Google Forms (Anonymous).
- Timing: Immediately after session.
- Q: "Was the content relevant?"
Level 2: Learning
"Did they learn it?"
- Tool: Kahoot / Quiz.
- Timing: During or End of session.
- Q: "What are the 4 Es?"
The Feedback Loop
Using Data to Improve
Collecting feedback is useless if you don't act on it.
- Analyze: Look for patterns. (e.g., "Everyone hated the breakout rooms").
- Adjust: Next time, make instructions clearer.
- Share: Tell students/trainees: "Based on your feedback, we changed X."
Final Workshop Activity
Your Turn
🛠️ Create Your Digital Plan
Goal: Create a 1-Week Digital Lesson Plan for your subject.
1. Open the Lesson Builder Tool.
2. Choose a topic (e.g., "Thermodynamics").
3. Map out 6 Days using different tools.
4. Export PDF and email it to me.
